On the second or third day Ms. Gruwell decided she would get her students journals or diaries so no matter what time of the day, they always have something to turn to if they need to talk or write.
She gave them the option of putting them in a locked cabinet at the end of the day. She would check the cabinet at the end of the day and if they didn't want their journals read she would just skim through the books to make sure they had written that day.
This went on for the rest of the year and it actually changed most of their outlooks on a lot of things.
